Summary:
The Educational Counselor is to provide professional educational consultation and academic support to international high school students with diverse cultural backgrounds; design educational programs to promote the international students’ growth, evaluate their abilities, and build their college candidacy; and assist these students through their high school career and college admissions process by working with their parents and high school education team, in addition to collaborating closely with InGenius’ own college application and admission professionals.
The specific job duties of this professional position include, but they are not limited to:
- Conducting career assessment and personality assessment on students. Assist students and parents/guardians to interpret the assessment result and explore career options;
- Counsel students on education plans, such as course selection, extracurricular guidance, summer program applications, academic competitions, and personal project planning, etc.;
- Provide psychological, social, and emotional support; provide crisis intervention; refer students to mental health professionals when necessary;
- Guide students and their parents/guardians through the college application process. Educate students on appropriate interviewing techniques, self-assessment tools, and application essay writing techniques;
- Counsel individual students to help them understand and overcome personal, social, or behavioral problems affecting their educational or vocational situations. Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, administrators, and other InGenius professionals to discuss students’ progress, solve behavioral, academic, and related problems, and determine the priorities for students and their resource in need;
- Provide students with information regarding college degree programs, admission requirements, and financial aid opportunities etc.; Refer students to degree programs based on interests, aptitudes, and educational assessments;
- Communicate effectively with parents using a variety of resources and confer with parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals to discuss student’s progress to determine priorities for students and their needs.
Job Requirements:
- A minimum of a master’s degree in education with a concentration of Youth/Human Development or a closely related field;
- One year of experience as an Educational or College Counselor working with international high school students;
- In-depth understanding and profound knowledge in educational services, counseling, and youth development;
- Knowledge of adolescence and youth developmental patterns, developmental process, and potential behavioral problems;
- Thorough understanding of the social context and personal relationships in youth growth; and ability to apply the knowledge to address real world developmental problems and promote positive developmental outcomes;
- Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects;
- Knowledge of U.S. education system and college admission process and trends;
- Ability to create or use different assessment strategies to evaluate the effectiveness of educational intervention/prevention programs;
- Ability to create questionnaires, collect and analyze the response data;
- Skills in selecting appropriate assessment instruments or tools (personality questionnaires, career Aptitude Tests, etc.), and analyzing and interpreting the assessment information;
- Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
- Be able to conduct critical thinking, make judgment with logic and reasoning and be keen on identifying potential problems, finding solutions, and making feasible plans;
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills for working with students, parents, and team members.
